Stanislav Shats and Stanislav Sushkov took part in an ascent of one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus – Mount Kazbek. The expedition, organized as part of a sports program under the guidance of experienced instructors, started from Georgian territory. The program included acclimatization at altitudes of 2,500 and 3,500 meters, as well as an acclimatization hike to a height of 4,430 meters. However, due to a severe weather warning, the difficult decision was made to abort the summit push for Kazbek (5,033 m) and make an emergency descent to base camp.
Our colleagues are no strangers to the challenges of mountain climbing. Stanislav Sushkov has extensive trekking experience in Eastern Siberia, the Far East, and Central Asia. Stanislav Shats has previously summited Mount Elbrus, which stands at 5,642 meters.
Kazbek and Elbrus are both so called "five-thousanders" (peaks over 5,000 meters) located in the central part of the Caucasus, 183 kilometers apart. The route on Kazbek has a difficulty level of 2B, and thus, it is more technically challenging compared to the standard route on Elbrus (1B-2A).
Despite having to change their climbing plans due to the weather, our colleagues enjoyed the charm of Georgia and the Caucasus Mountains. They are already making plans to return to the route and attempt another ascend next year.
